Tesla's Shanghai plant seems to be making the necessary preparations for the production of the China-made Model Y, including the use of a new body punching machine to simplify the production process.
Tesla fan WUWA Vision used the images captured by the drone to show that the body stamping area at the rear of the first phase of the Shanghai factory is expanding.
The picture shows that the construction of the body stamping workshop seems to involve deep excavation, which indicates that the area will accommodate new large machines, or at least larger machines than those used on the existing Model 3 production line.
Tesla’s patents and its CEO Elon Musk’s statement all suggest that the new body stamping process may revolutionize Model Y production in China.
Interestingly, this huge press seems to be built in the first phase of the building, and the outside world generally thinks that this building is only assigned to Model 3.
Tesla did not disclose the reason behind it, although the new punching machine may also be used for Model 3 production.
However, this may also mean that Model Y will start production in the first phase of the project.
Such a strategy would allow Tesla to start producing crossover vehicles ahead of time, although the second phase of the Shanghai plant is still under construction.
Car guru Sandy Munro recently discovered that compared to Model 3, Model Y has larger castings and the body seems to be more refined.
With the new press, Tesla will be able to produce Model Y in a faster and more efficient way.
