Huawei will get paid by the U.S. despite Trump administration efforts to erase it from the supply chain as it owns the most patents on 5G technology, according to a new study.

China Unicom said today it signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Huawei in Beijing on June 6 to advance network construction for on the ground and space uses.

Mai Yanzhou, deputy general manager of China Unicom, said the company has opened 130,000 5G base stations and the total size of 5G base stations will exceed 300,000 by the end of this year.

It has been a year since June 6 last year, when the commercial license for 5G in China was issued.

China is expected to have more than 600,000 5G base stations by the end of this year, covering cities above the prefecture level nationwide.

Recently, some users have reported receiving phone calls from telecom carriers selling them a 5G plan for 89 yuan (USD 12.5) per month. The three major carriers' customer service confirmed that there are indeed discounts.

Some of Shanghai's public telephone booths have recently been retrofitted with small 5G base stations to begin providing 5G Internet access to users.

In order to speed up the deployment of 5G networks, China Telecom Yunnan will gradually shut down its 3G data services as of June 1.
