Tencent Games said today that it upgraded its measures to protect minors from June 17, expanding the application of facial recognition technology to screen users suspected of being minors.
In the new phase, Tencent Games will initiate facial recognition verification in game login and payment scenarios.
In the game login link: for adult accounts suspected of being operated by minors, facial recognition verification is required when they log in to the game, and the data is compared with the authoritative public security platform.
Users who refuse or fail to be authenticated will be placed under juvenile anti-addiction supervision for a maximum of 1.5 hours per day on weekdays and up to 3 hours a day on public holidays. They cannot log into the game from 22:00 to 08:00.
Previously, the initiative has been piloted in "Honor of Kings" and "Peaceful Elite," and has recently covered the vast majority of Tencent's handheld games, and will subsequently come into effect in all handheld products in operation.
In the recharge payment process, when an adult account suspected of being operated by a minor has a monthly recharge of more than 400 yuan, or if the user has abnormal recharge behavior (such as a surge in recharge amount in a short period of time), the user will be asked to undergo facial recognition verification.
A user who refuses or fails to authenticate will not be able to continue topping up. In May this year, Tencent Games has conducted a small-scale validation test of the relevant technology, and will continue to cover all Tencent Games operating Hands-On Products.
Simply put, it will become more difficult for children to impersonate their parents to log in to games or make purchases in games, Tencent Games said.
