The adenovirus vector recombinant coronavirus vaccine developed by the team of academician Chen Wei of the Institute of Military Engineering, Chinese Academy of Military Sciences, launched the second-phase clinical trial on April 12, according to CCTV News.
According to the World Health Organization, this is the only new coronavirus vaccine currently in Phase II clinical trials in the world.
Compared with the first phase, the second phase of the clinical trial of recombinant adenovirus vector recombinant coronavirus vaccine has opened the upper limit of the age, and let some elderly volunteers over 60 years old join it.
Chen Wei said that there are many middle-aged and elderly people with new coronavirus pneumonia in critically ill patients, and the vaccine must provide them with a safety barrier.
In the process of prevention and control of new coronavirus outbreaks, China has organized a variety of technical routes for vaccine research and development. Among them, the development of adenovirus vector recombinant new coronavirus vaccine has made significant progress and is currently in an international leading position.
Chen Wei said that the vaccine uses the modified replication-deficient adenovirus as a carrier, carrying the S gene of a new coronavirus, and enters the body of the subject, so that the body produces immune memory of the S protein, so as to achieve the rejection "outside the door" effect.
On January 26, Chen Wei led a team to Wuhan to conduct vaccine research and development at the same time as the research base in Beijing.
The 108 volunteers who completed the first phase of clinical trials of the vaccine on March 27th have all completed concentrated medical observation and are in good health.
The second phase of the clinical trial of recombinant adenovirus vector recombinant coronavirus vaccine will recruit 500 volunteers and introduce a placebo control group to further evaluate the immunogenicity and safety of the vaccine.
As of 17:00 on April 13, 273 volunteers have been vaccinated.
