Researchers in Finland have developed a computer model that shows how viruses move and spread in the air, thus illustrating the importance of avoiding crowded areas.
Preliminary research results show that particles carrying viruses in the air can stay longer than we thought.
Aalto University from Finland released a 3D modeling video, from which you can see what happens if a person infected with COVID-19 coughs in a supermarket with corridors or aisles and a typical indoor ventilation system.
This research is the result of a joint effort of Aalto University, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the VTT Technical Research Center of Finland, and the University of Helsinki, and shows how the particles spread around coughers.
The particles will eventually become thinner, but this may take several minutes to be diluted, which means that other particles are still easily absorbed.
"Someone infected by the coronavirus, can cough and walk away, but then leave behind extremely small aerosol particles carrying the coronavirus," Aalto University Assistant Professor Ville Vuorinen said.
