Actual sales revenue in China's game market reaches RMB 278.68 billion ($42.65 billion) in 2020, up 20.71% year-on-year, marking the fifth consecutive year of growth for the Chinese game market, according to a report released today.
The 2020 China Game Industry Annual Conference was held in Guangzhou from December 15-17, and the 2020 China Game Industry Report, released at the conference and completed by the China Game Industry Research Institute with assistance from Gamma Data, shows that the number of Chinese game users reached 665 million in 2020.
China's mobile game market sales revenue reaches RMB 209.676 billion in 2020, an increase of RMB 51.565 billion from 2019, up 32.61% year-on-year. The mobile game market accounts for 75.2% of sales revenue.
In comparison, the sales revenue of the Chinese client game market in 2020 was RMB 55.92 billion and the actual sales revenue of the web game market is only RMB 7.608 billion, both decreasing year-on-year.
Revenue from games developed by Chinese developers in overseas markets grew 33.25% year-on-year in 2020, reaching $15.450 billion in sales revenue.
Among them, revenue from the US accounted for the highest share, at 27.55%, while Japan accounted for 23.91% and South Korea 8.81%.
Revenue from sales of developer-developed games in the domestic market reached 240.192 billion yuan in 2020, an increase of 50.678 billion yuan from 2019 and a year-on-year increase of 26.74%.
The top 100 Chinese mobile game products in terms of revenue in 2020 have a relatively balanced distribution of games of various genres. Role-playing (RPG) games accounted for the highest share at 19.48%; multiplayer online tactical competition and design shooting accounted for about 15% each, and these three together accounted for 49.8%.
In addition, among the top 100 types of mobile games developed by Chinese developers in overseas markets, strategy games (including SLG) have the highest revenue share, accounting for 37.81%. Shooting games ranked second, accounting for 17.97%.
