Huawei started to include MediaTek processors in several of its phones after production of the HiSilicon chip was blocked. But now it looks like that path won't work either.

In the second quarter of this year, China shipped more than 43 million 5G smartphones, of which Huawei HiSilicon is the largest 5G processor supplier, with a 54.8% market share, according to data recently released by IDC.

In the second quarter of this year, MediaTek jumped to the top of the smartphone AP (application processor) market in China with a 38.3% share, overtaking Qualcomm's 37.8%, according to Digitimes Research.

Huawei recently posted a new job ad seeking a "lithography process engineer".

Qualcomm, HiSilicon, Apple, Samsung and MediaTek are the top five vendors in terms of application processor (AP) revenue share, according to Strategy Analytics.

Due to the US ban, Huawei's chip-making arm Hisilicon could not use US devices to mass-produced chips. But Huawei had already had a backup plan with its smartphones beginning to adopt MediaTek mobile phone chips in large numbers.

For reasons that are well known, Huawei's self-developed HiSilicon chip is going to face a big test, and TSMC may not be able to continue foundry work if it doesn't get U.S. approval in September.

Huawei HiSilicon recently announced a global recruitment campaign for teenage geniuses, including outstanding undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students from around the world who graduated between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2021.

On May 21, Shanghai HiSilicon released its XR chip platform, the first XR chip with 8K decoding capability and GPU and NPU integration. The first AR glasses based on this platform are the Rokid Vision.
