On February 12 and February 13, the first two days of the Chinese Lunar New Year, the Pingduoduo app's daily active users (DAU) surpassed the Taobao app for the first time, according to QuestMobile, a third-party data agency.
QuestMobile data shows that the number of daily active users of the Taobao app was stable at 319 million in January this year, while Pingduoduo was stable at 274 million.
However, on February 12, Pingduoduo, which did not cooperate with CCTV on that night's most popular celebration program in China, reached 259 million active users, surpassing Taobao app's 237 million.
Pingduoduo's short-lived victory may be directly related to its series of promotions; in early February, Pingduoduo invested 3 billion yuan in a lucky gift money marketing campaign for the Chinese New Year.
Pingduoduo also encouraged merchants to stay open during the Chinese New Year and worked with several courier companies to ensure that participating merchants were able to ship within 48 hours.
While the user activity from the campaign was somewhat fortuitous, Pingduoduo's DAU surpassed that of the Taobao app for the first time, which is still a landmark milestone.
As of the end of September 2020, Pingduoduo's annual transaction volume (GMV) was RMB 1,457.6 billion, and the number of active buyers reached 731 million annually.
It took 14 years for Alibaba and 19 years for Jingdong to reach trillion yuan in annual GMV, but only 4.5 years for Pingduoduo.
Pingduoduo's latest announcement shows that the platform's agricultural sales will exceed RMB 270 billion in 2020, exceeding the company's previous guidance of RMB 250 billion, up more than 100% year-over-year.
As of the end of the third quarter of 2020, Alibaba had 757 million annual active users in China's retail market, compared to Pingduoduo's 731 million, making them very close.
Alibaba had 779 million annual active buyers in the fourth quarter of last year, and Pingduoduo has yet to release financial data, but some analysts are already expecting it to surpass Taobao in terms of annual active buyers.
