Chinese phone maker OPPO has released a 30-second video on Weibo, showing a foldable phone being charged with long-range wireless charging technology.
In the clip, the phone is still charging without touching the charging pad, which is more advanced than traditional wireless charging technology. This technology will also be demonstrated at MWC in Shanghai.
The advantages of long-range wireless charging over wired charging are unique, including convenience, the safety of transmission and environmental integration.
There are no technical barriers to long-range wireless charging technology, and it is even possible to achieve wireless charging over long distances. But the question is how to productize it, now there are laws and regulations, equipment safety, personal safety, and cost constraints, said Zhang Jialiang, chief scientist of OPPO VOOC flash charging.
And on January 29, 2021, OPPO's local rival Xiaomi's CEO Lei Jun announced long-range wireless charging technology and said it will be implemented on Xiaomi 11.
The core of Xiaomi's long-range wireless charging technology lies in spatial positioning and spaced energy transmission. Its self-developed spatial charging pile has five built-in phase interference antennas, which can locate the phone in milliseconds and accurately detect the phone's location.
The 144 antennas constitute a phase-controlled array that transmits millimeter waves directionally to the phone through beamforming.
The technology has now achieved 5-watt long-range charging for a single device within a radius of several meters. Not only that, but multiple devices can also be charged simultaneously (each device supports 5 watts), and even blocking objects do not reduce charging efficiency.
