Xiaomi's release of the world's first mass-produced transparent TV on August 11 sparked widespread interest. Now, the company's founder Lei Jun has taken to Weibo to say that the TV is much more difficult to mass-produce than expected, and explained why he's insisting on making it.
The transparent TV belongs to the Xiaomi Master series. It comes with a 55-inch OLED screen, has a 120Hz refresh rate and is priced at 49,999 yuan.
Lei Jun said that the Xiaomi transparent TV is the company's first foray on the way to exploring the ultimate form of future TVs.
Its screen is like a piece of transparent glass that can barely be felt before it's lit. It removes the traditional backplane, the screen is almost "disappearing", as if only in science fiction movies to see the future of the screen into reality, Lei Jun said.
He said, Xiaomi's engineering culture was behind their push for the "silly project".
Lei Jun said, Xiaomi dare to try, want to be the first to shake the wings of the butterfly effect every time.
