The Zhejiang provincial government today announced that it will invest more than 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion) over five years to establish the Hupan Lab, which will be led by the Alibaba DAMO Academy and focus on data science for disruptive technological innovation.
According to the plan, the Hupan Lab will focus on solving the key, common, and bottleneck technologies that constrain the development of the digital economy.
In addition to the Hupan Lab, the Zhejiang Province also announced the establishment of Zhijiang Lab, Liangzhu Lab, and Xihu Lab which focuses on smart science, life sciences, and other areas.
DAMO Academy was founded in 2017 and has published more than 500 papers in top academic conferences worldwide. It has become a global leader in the field of data science research, including machine intelligence.
DAMO Academy currently has 15 laboratories including a speech lab, a vision lab, a language technology lab, and a decision intelligence lab, making it the most extensive and profound research institution in China for cutting-edge data science research.
Hupan Lab will build three basic capability centers: Data Science Center, Frontier Technology Center, and Industrial Application Center.
