Driven by Apple, smartphones have been increasingly adopting OLED screens. Chinese panel makers including BOE, Shenzhen China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd (CSOT) has the capability to produce OLED panels and has started supplying them to smartphone manufacturers.
According to Consultant DSCC (Display Supply Chain Consultants), BOE's share of global revenue from OLED panels used in smartphones is expected to double this year.
DSCC said BOE's share of global smartphone OLED panel revenue has gone up from 1.9 percent in the fourth quarter of last year to 6 percent at the end of the first quarter, almost equal to LG's LG Display.
In the fourth quarter of this year, BOE's share is expected to reach 12 percent, the report said.
The DSCC said that BOE's share of the smartphone OLED panel market increased mainly due to two reasons.
The first is the widespread use of OLED screens in newly launched 5G smartphones. The second is the expansion of supply to more Huawei models and to new customers such as OPPO, Xiaomi and even Apple.
Smartphones now account for a large share of the world's OLED screens, and the DSCC report predicts that this year, the number of smartphones with OLED screens will increase by 1.5 percent.
The share of OLED panel revenue from smartphones has increased significantly to $26.6 billion, accounting for 80 percent of the $33 billion global OLED panel market.
