A week after getting the 2D15 firmware update for the AirPods Pro, Apple has finally released the same numbered firmware update (previously 2A364) for the second generation AirPods as well.
It should be noted that the second generation AirPods do not support active noise reduction, so it's unclear what changes this update brings.
Referring to AirPods Pro user reviews, some say Apple has improved the active noise reduction experience while others don't feel it.
Typically, AirPods firmware updates result in performance improvements, bug fixes, and feature adjustments. After upgrading to 2D15, AirPods may fix some of the issues that some users experience, such as improving the pairing experience.
Those who need to, can first connect AirPods to their iOS device and go to 'Settings -> General -> About -> AirPods' to check the current firmware version.
While Apple hasn't given clear guidelines for the update, you can generally start by activating the AirPods audio feature, placing it in the charging case and connecting the power supply to the device for a smooth firmware update.
Apple had released the 2C54 firmware update in December 2019, but it was later withdrawn. So some users may still be using the 2C54 firmware, while others are using the 2A364 firmware.
