Valve, the parent company of the world's largest gaming platform Steam, announced on Friday the termination of support for the SteamVR on macOS, in favor of focusing on Windows and Linux systems.
Steam had a honeymoon period with Apple, and at WWDC 2017, Apple and Valve jointly announced the introduction of SteamVR to macOS. but it turns out that Mac hardware isn't much of a draw for Steam users.
The decision comes as no surprise, as data previously showed that only 4% of Steam users were playing games on a Mac, while only 1% of users had a VR headset and far fewer were playing VR on a Mac.
There are not many Macs that can meet the minimum configuration requirements of SteamVR. The minimum configuration requirement for the CPU of SteamVR is i5-4590, and the dual-core MacBook Air is out of the question.
The minimum configuration requirement for SteamVR graphics card is GTX 970/R9 290, and the MacBook Pro, Mac mini and entry-level iMac with core graphics are also eliminated.
That said, to meet SteamVR's minimum configuration requirements, users must buy an extremely expensive Mac, but how many of those who actually buy a Mac with this spec are buying it back to play games?
