Apple is considering bundling AirPods with new iPhones in 2020, according to a report from DigiTimes.
"Smartphone manufacturers including Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi all hope to bundle new phone models with their TWS earphones for sale next year,” the report cited industry sources as saying.
TWS is short for true wireless stereo headphones. Apple’s AirPods and Samsung's Galaxy Buds are all TWS earphones.
Apple has been offering wired EarPods in the package with the iPhone, and this pairing has been around for years. The EarPods are cheaper and sell for just $29.
AirPods, as an independent product category of Apple, has a very large sales volume, especially when the second-generation AirPods and AirPods Pro are released this year.
The cost of AirPods is higher, and so are other brands of TWS headsets. Bundling them with flagship mobile phones is certainly a big benefit for consumers, but it is not realistic for manufacturers unless the price goes lower.
According to analyst estimates, Apple may ship 65 million AirPods in 2019, and AirPods shipments may reach 85-90 million next year.
This product will also effectively improve Apple's performance. If Apple bundles iPhone 12 Pro models with Apple AirPods next year, it will undoubtedly increase sales of AirPods significantly.
The DigiTimes story is not necessarily credible, but now EarPods should really be eliminated, and we need more information to confirm this rumor.
