Wang Chenglu, president of Huawei's consumer business software division, said HarmonyOS will soon be open source and the company will conduct HarmonyOS-related courses at 15 schools, including Wuhan University, according to 36kr.com.
HarmonyOS will be open-sourced this year for devices with 128MB-4GB of memory according to the established plan, said Yang Haisong, vice president of Huawei's Consumer Business AI and Intelligence All-Scene Business Unit, in a media interview at the recent Huawei harmony partner summit.
Yang said that third-party cell phone manufacturers are welcome to use HarmonyOS and build an open-source community together.
However, it's entirely up to the vendors' own business considerations as to who the third-party handset vendors are and when they adopt HarmonyOS, Yang said.
HarmonyOS is Huawei's full-scenario-oriented distributed operating system to be officially released in 2019.
According to the company’s plan, HarmonyOS will be open source for 128KB-128MB terminal devices such as large screens, watches, and cars from September 10, 2020.
HarmonyOS will be open source for devices with 128MB-4GB of memory from April 2021, and it will be open source for all devices above 4GB from October 2021.
