Chinese manufacturers' OLED panels reached a market share of 13.2 percent in 2020, surpassing 10 percent for the first time, a new report shows.
Chinese panel makers had a market share of just 1.1 percent in 2016, but rose to 9.8 percent in 2019, the Korea Display Industry Association report released on March 14 said.
Chinese panel maker BOE entered Apple's supply chain in 2020 as a supplier of iPhone 12 6.1-inch OLED panels.
Between 2017 and 2020, BOE's market share increased from 0.1% to 8.8%.
Chinese panel makers, including CSOT, Tianma, and EDO, are expanding their investments, with more than 20 OLED production lines under construction or planned in China.
Although there is a large technology gap with South Korean manufacturers, which hold more than 80 percent of the market share, the price advantage of Chinese panel makers has led to their rising market share, Business Korea reported.
Chinese panel makers received government production subsidies three years ago to expand LCD panel production capacity, offering 30 percent lower prices than Samsung to seize a share of the global LCD market, the report said.
This led to a sharp drop in prices for large LCD panels. 55-inch 4K LCD panels were priced at $192 in August 2018 but fell to $100 in December 2019.
