Huawei owns 15.4 percent of global 5G patents, the most in the world, according to IPLytics, a patent data provider.
As of February, Samsung, Nokia and Qualcomm ranked second to fourth with about 13 percent share each, the report on global 5G technology patents shows.
ZTE, another Chinese communications equipment maker, ranked sixth with a 5.6 percent share, and it was tied with Huawei in the cell phone business a decade ago.
In terms of the number of 5G standard-essential patent families declared, the top 10 companies accounted for more than 80% and the top 20 companies accounted for more than 93%, this report shows.
The process of patent granting is so rigorous that it can take years from application to actual patent grant, and the rankings in this report will not change much in a short period of time, IPlytics said.
Huawei has previously filed several patents on automotive aspects, including methods for charging between electric vehicles, methods for detecting blind spots in vehicles, powertrain, and electric vehicles.
