Apple's newly designed MacBook Pro to be launched later this year will increase its shipping momentum, allowing MacBook shipments to grow 25-30 percent year-over-year to 20 million units in 2021, Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a report released on Tuesday.

Apple is expected to launch two new designs of MacBook Pro in the second half of the year, with several major design and specification changes, Kuo said, adding that one of the practical changes for users is to have an SD card slot and HDMI port.

In his January report, Kuo predicted that Apple will launch 2 newly designed MacBook Pro with several major design and specification changes in the second half of the year, including the exterior design, restoration of MagSafe, and removal of the OLED touch bar. He also expected these devices to come with more I/O, no Intel CPU option and a mini LED display.

"Our latest survey shows that about 75-80% of laptop models are equipped with HDMI ports and about 35-40% are equipped with SD card slots," Kuo said.

It is expected that the new MacBook Pro will be equipped with an SD card slot and HDMI port, and this practical change will help push up the demand for switching, he said.

Benefiting from several significant design and specification changes to the new MacBook Pro, Kuo predicts that overall MacBook shipments will grow 25-30 percent year-over-year to 20 million units in 2021.

Kuo emphasized that the strong replacement demand for MacBooks will come primarily from the new model's specification and design changes, not just from working from home.
