MediaTek may ship more than 120 million 5G chips next year due to increased orders from major customers such as OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi, the Economic Daily News said, citing industry insiders.
By comparison, MediaTek is expected to ship about 45 million 5G chips this year.
The report said MediaTek 5G chip shipments will increase, mainly benefiting from next year's global 5G cell phone mass replacement wave, especially in China, non-Apple brands are almost all MediaTek customers.
Huawei has announced the split of Honor, which ships 70 million low- and mid-range handsets per year, which will enable MediaTek to ship 150 million 5G chips next year, the report said.
Citing industry sources, the report said MediaTek's market share in 5G cell phones this year is about 22.5 percent. If next year's global smartphone shipments reach 500 million units, MediaTek's market share of next year's 5G chip shipments could climb to about 24 percent.
If MediaTek ships more than 150 million 5G chips next year, then its market share is expected to reach 30%, closing the gap with Qualcomm.
