China's smartphone market continued to contract in the third quarter of this year, with shipments down 14 percent year-on-year, market research firm Counterpoint said in a report on October 29.
Xiaomi was the only handset maker to show growth in shipments. In the third quarter, Xiaomi's shipments increased 8 percent year-on-year and its market share increased to 11 percent, up from 9 percent in the same period last year.
Counterpoint attributed Xiaomi's strong performance in the third quarter to aggressive promotions in August when Xiaomi celebrated its 10th anniversary.
In contrast, Apple and Huawei both saw sales decline, snapping several quarters of growth.
Apple's shipments in China fell 7 percent in the third quarter, while Huawei's fell 3 percent. But their overall market share remained relatively stable, at 8 percent for Apple and 45 percent for Huawei.
Both Apple and Huawei launched new flagship devices in October, and analysts expect demand for the new phones to be strong. iPhone 11 was the best-selling phone in the third quarter, despite not supporting 5G, according to Counterpoint.
Huawei Consumer Business CEO Yu Chengdong said this summer that Huawei would no longer be able to produce its high-end Kirin chipset starting this September.
Counterpoint Research recently also released its third quarter report on the Indian mobile phone market. According to the report, Samsung topped the charts in the third quarter with a 24% share, ahead of Xiaomi's 23%, winning the title again after two years.
