Worldwide PC shipments increased 14.6 percent year-over-year to 81.3 million units in the third quarter, with the top five vendors being Lenovo, HP, Dell, Apple, and Acer, according to data released yesterday by IDC.
While HP temporarily took the top spot in shipments in the second quarter of this year, Lenovo regained that spot in the third quarter.
"Consumer demand and institutional demand approached record levels in some cases," IDC's Jitesh Ubrani said in a statement. "Had the market not been hampered by component shortages, notebook shipments would have soared even higher during the third quarter as market appetite was yet unsatiated."
The Asia-Pacific excluding Japan (APeJ) traditional PC market grew only by single digits, but this was already higher than IDC's forecast.
In Canada, the traditional PC market remains very active, with 17 consecutive quarters of growth.
In the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region, traditional PC shipments grew by single digits in the third quarter, with growth in notebooks more than offsetting the decline in desktops on a quarterly basis.
Notably, Latin America and the US saw double-digit growth in traditional PC markets, with Latin America seeing double-digit growth for the first time in five years.
