Huawei's Australian subsidiary said today that it will continue to reduce its workforce and investment in Australia, according to ifeng.com.
In 2018, Australia banned Huawei from supplying equipment for its 5G mobile network, citing national security risks. Huawei criticized Australia's move as politically motivated.
"Simply put, the 5G ban on Huawei has already led us to cut 1,000 high-tech and high-earning jobs in Australia," Jeremy Mitchell, chief corporate affairs officer of Huawei's Australian subsidiary, said in an emailed statement. The number has dropped from 1,200 to less than 200 and will be even lower next year."
Mitchell said Huawei has ended its A$100 million ($72.3 million) R&D investment in Australia since the country's 5G ban.
