For over a billion WeChat users, it can be a hassle to simply transfer their chat history to a new phone every time they change phones. On Tuesday, the WeChat team posted a video on Weibo explaining two ways on how to transfer WeChat chat logs.
WeChat monthly active users grow 6.5% year on year to 1.206 billion in Q2
The first one is to scan the chat records directly from WeChat, and then find "My - Settings - General - Chat History Backup and Migration Settings - Migrate Chat History to Another Device" on your old phone. Then, you can scan the generated QR code on your new phone to migrate to another device.
The second method requires logging into WeChat on your computer, using it to backup your WeChat chat history, then logging into WeChat on your new phone and selecting Restore Chat History.
The WeChat team also stresses that you should never uninstall WeChat and lose your chat history after uninstalling it.
95% of Chinese users would rather give up their iPhone than WeChat, survey shows
The WeChat team's intention was to teach users to avoid losing their chat history, but unexpectedly, a lot of critical comments appeared in the comments section of this Weibo post.
This forced the WeChat team to enable comment moderation and block a lot of criticism. In the end, the WeChat team was forced to delete the Weibo post.
