It was previously reported that Huawei's Android phone system could not be upgraded due to the expiration of the US temporary agreement, and that it would not even be able to upgrade system updates and security patches in the future. However, Huawei has responded denying the rumors of the inability to update.
Huawei said it will continue to provide system updates and security patches and all Huawei phones with Google Play pre-installed will still be able to download and update apps using the Play Store.
"For phones that do not come with Google Play, new apps and updates can be managed through the pre-installed Huawei AppGallery," Huawei said.
As of last Thursday, the general license that allowed Google to work with Huawei to maintain current phones, which was designed to help rural US communities whose networks rely on Huawei devices, has expired, providing time to acquire new devices.
The license provides an opportunity for users of Huawei devices and telecommunications providers to continue to temporarily operate the devices and existing networks while speeding up the transition to an alternative provider, the Commerce Department said in an email.
