South African mobile data network operator Rain has announced the launch of Africa's first commercial 5G independent network in partnership with Huawei.
Thanks to Huawei's end-to-end solution, Rain's 5G SA network now covers Sea Point, Claremont, Goodwood, Bellville, Durbanville and Cape Town City Centre in Cape Town.
Based on the network, Rain's fixed wireless broadband access (FWA) experience to consumers will be significantly enhanced.
Rain is the first telecom operator to commercially launch a 5G network in Africa and has the world's top 3 5G FWA subscriber base.
Since the launch of the 5G network in November 2019, Rain now has the largest amount of 5G spectrum and sites in South Africa.
"5G SA network will bring further 5G network performance improvement, including shorter service delay, higher upstream rate, and network reliability, users can experience more smooth high-end cloud VR, cloud game business, more Richer enterprise services and more attractive wireless home broadband services," Rain CMO Khaya Dlanga said.
The Rain 5G SA network features Huawei's fully converged core network solution and Massive MIMO technology, which provides the foundation to support 5G high-bandwidth, low latency and subsequent multi-slice scenarios.
It will also meet end-user demand for high-bandwidth services such as AR/VR, 4K video, cloud gaming and more.
