Qualcomm today announced an upgrade to the Snapdragon 865 processor, the Snapdragon 865 Plus, with a performance boost of about 10 percent and is designed to be built for gaming and AI applications.
Compared to the standard Snapdragon 865, the Snapdragon 865 Plus has three key improvements.
The Kryo 585 CPU has been clocked at up to 3.1 GHz, which is an increase over the standard 865.
The Adreno 650 GPU is 10 percent faster in graphics rendering.
There is newly added compatibility with Qualcomm's FastConnect 6900 connectivity suite, which the company says supports up to 3.6Gbps Wi-Fi 6E speeds.
The Snapdragon 865 Plus continues to support HDR gaming, 10-bit color depth and Rec.2020 color gamut, and hardware acceleration The H.265 and VP9 decoding.
It also has HDR playback features for HDR10+, HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision, as well as Support for the latest Bluetooth 5.2 specification.
The Snapdragon 865 Plus supports up to 16GB of 2750 MHz LP-DDR5 memory or 2133MHz LPDDR4x RAM, unchanged from the Snapdragon 865.
This is similar to last year's Snapdragon 855 Plus upgrades over the regular 855, the Snapdragon 855 Plus Improvements have been made to the gaming performance of the CPU and GPU.
This also means that Qualcomm isn't integrating the Snapdragon X55 modem into the main chipset, an improvement that seems to be coming at the earliest. Wait until 2021.
Qualcomm says the first Snapdragon 865 Plus phones will be officially released starting in Q3, currently, ROG Games Both the Phone 3 and the Lenovo Saver gaming phone have been announced to be released with the processor on July 22.
