Huawei and Xiaomi have purchased ultra-thin flexible glass to make products with extra-large curvature such as folding and surround screen products, Weibo blogger @数码闲聊站 said today.
These ultra-thin flexible glasses are expected to be used in Huawei's next-generation Mate X and Xiaomi's MIX Alpha phones.
Ultra-thin flexible glass (UTG) is an optimized version of the polyimide film used in the first generation of folding phones including the Samsung GALAXY Fold/Huawei Mate X. It's relatively more durable, thinner and bendable.
It is treated with a reinforced process that enhances the flexibility and durability of 30μm (1μm=1/1,000,000m) ultra-thin glass.
The treatment is done by infusing special materials into the ultra-thin glass to ensure uniform flexibility.
The previously released Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha 5G concept phone features a flexible AMOLED surround screen from Visionox, as well as a unique glass lamination technology that makes the entire surround screen much less "plastic”.
The Huawei Mate Xs already uses ultra-thin flexible glass, which performs better than its predecessors in every aspect.
