On May 6, Lane Crawford and 3812 Gallery presented a cross-border art exhibition that featured an AI landscape painting entitled The Fauvist Dream of Gemini 03.
At the exhibition, an AI landscape painting titled The Fauvist Dream of Gemini 03 attracted attention, as did the Escapism series and the Far Side of the Moon series, which were painted by Hong Kong artist Victor Wong and his robot, AI Gemini.
These AI paintings are by Hong Kong artist Victor Wong and his robot, AI Gemini.
The Fauvist Dream of Gemini 03
The Chinese painting style which literally means "writing ideas" focuses more on the combination of calligraphy, line and shading techniques to reveal the spirit of the subject matter of the work.
So, it may sound strange that this human-centered art style relies on robots to interpret it. But that's what Victor Wong is doing.
In 2018, Victor Wong made AI Gemini, the world's first artificially intelligent ink artist, and in 2019 he announced his first AI painting series, Escapism, at the INK NOW Taipei Art Fair, marking the beginning of the "TECH-iNK" era.
Wong believes that the creativity of technology will open up more possibilities in the world of Chinese ink and art.
Wong, an artist with multiple identities in physics, film and electrical engineering, has spent three years developing the AI Gemini.
The AI Gemini, as he puts it, excels in the traditional "free-hand" style of painting, rather than directly reproducing reality with data.
Escapism
I see AI Gemini as a student, teaching him simple brushstrokes and procedures that allow him to develop his own style, rather than simply copying the work of the ink masters," says Victor Wong.
"I believe that AI is advanced enough to be able to balance artistic aesthetics. Indeed, the AI Gemini has also proven itself to be an able student, as it has been able to work through meticulous algorithms and Random factors that draw beautifully without help."
Arguably, AI Gemini has developed a "consciousness" of its own, with its messy, expansive landscape forms that I can't predict anymore, he claims.

For Gemini's creative principles, Wong says that the "causes" of geological landscapes such as gravity, tectonic collisions, erosion, and tidal volumes help Gemini construct a base formula that creates a three-dimensional landscape that becomes the "mind" of each painting.
It's similar to the practice of ink painting: conceive of a "landscape of the mind" before painting, he says in a video.
AI Gemini's painting angles are also highly trained. After deciding on a mental landscape, AI Gemini "roams" to the best vantage point and then uses a robotic arm and a "magic wand" to create the image. Ink on rice paper.
Wong wants to show the world's first AI ink artist how to create "mindscapes". the entire process.
So, in addition to producing the video, he also digitally presented the process in high resolution on a Samsung Frame TV.
