In the first quarter of this year, Huawei HiSilicon sales increased 54% year-on-year, becoming the first Chinese mainland semiconductor supplier to enter the top 10 in global sales, according to the latest data released by IC Insights.
Two new entrants to the top 10 in Q1 2020 were HiSilicon and NVIDIA, which squeezed out Infineon and Toshiba in the top 10.
The top 10 companies are Intel, Samsung, TSMC, SK Hynix, Micron, Broadcom, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, NVIDIA and HiSilicon.
By region, six of the TOP10 are located in the United States, two in South Korea, one each in Chinese mainland and Taiwan, including four fabless companies (BoT, Qualcomm, NVIDIA and HiSilicon) and one pure foundry (TSMC).
The top 10 semiconductor companies reported a 16% year-over-year increase in sales in the first quarter of 2020, more than double the global semiconductor industry's total sales increase of 7% in the first quarter of 2020. Nine of the top 10 companies had sales of at least $3 billion in the first quarter of 2020.
In addition, IC Insights reported that TSMC's revenue grew 45% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2020, an increase largely due to a surge in orders for 7nm chips from Apple and HiSilicon smartphones.
Currently, HiSilicon has become an increasingly important customer for TSMC, with the report stating that HiSilicon's share of TSMC's sales revenue reached 14% in 2019, up from just 5% in 2017. Notably, HiSilicon and Apple combined accounted for 37% of TSMC's total sales in 2019.
