Xiaomi's first quarter shipments rose 9%, ranking 4th globally, according to data released by market research firm Canalys.
The world's top five phone makers by the market are Samsung, Huawei, Apple, Xiaomi, VIVO. Samsung shipped 59.6 million phones to rank first, accounting for 21.9 percent of the global share, down 17 percent year-on-year.
Huawei shipped 49 million units, an 18 percent share, and likewise plunged 17 percent.
Apple shipped 37.1 million units, or 13.6 percent, down 8 percent year-over-year.
And the fourth and fifth place reversed the decline in one fell swoop, Xiaomi shipped 30.2 million units, a share of 11.1 percent, up 9 percent against the market.
Vivo shipped 24.2 million units, a share of 8.9%, up 3%.
The decline of Samsung, Huawei and Apple is mainly due to the shrinking global smartphone market, which shipped 272 million units in the first quarter of 2020, down 13% from 313 million units in the first quarter of 2019.
This comes after Strategy Analytics' global smartphone statistics for February also showed that the smartphone market suffered its worst-ever decline, with shipments down 38% year-on-year.
