In 2019, Apple's iPhone XR accounted for nearly 50% of the global smartphone market shipments, followed closely by the latest iPhone 11, which was launched in September, a report released by Omdia showed.
For the full year of 2019, shipments of the iPhone XR were approximately 46.3 million units, higher than the shipments of the latest iPhone 11.
Omdia claims that the iPhone 11 is the latest "affordable" iPhone launched by Apple, with total shipments of 37.3 million units since its release in September.
Samsung's Galaxy A10, Galaxy A50, and Galaxy A20 followed closely with Apple, with shipments of 30.3 million, 24.2 million, and 19.2 million units, ranking third, fourth and fifth.
Apple's high-end iPhone 11 Pro Max shipped 17.6 million units in the fourth quarter of 2019, ranking sixth.
The seventh-ranked iPhone 8 shipped slightly less than the iPhone 11 Pro Max at 17.4 million units. The iPhone 11 Pro shipped 15.5 million units, ranking ninth.
Omdia's head of smartphone research and analysis, Jusy Hong, said: "Apple has been ranked number one and number two for more than five years in a row on global smartphone shipments.
Compared with other competitors, Apple has a limited number of mobile phone models, so sales can be concentrated on a few popular smartphones, such as the iPhone XR. "
The analyst company also pointed out that the overall iPhone shipments fell for the second consecutive year in many years, and shipments in 2019 fell 4.6%. But this number has improved compared to 2018 shipments. In 2018, the overall iPhone shipments fell 5.1% year-on-year.
In February, a report from Counterpoint Research stated that the iPhone XR made Apple's iPhone the fastest growing high-end smartphone brand in India in 2019.
This increase was mainly due to the development of local manufacturing. Through local manufacturing, Apple not only meets procurement requirements, but also reduces the price of devices such as the iPhone XR.
