The number of smartphones sold worldwide continued to decline in the third quarter of 2019, decreasing 0.4% from the third quarter of 2018, according to Gartner.
Huawei, Samsung and OPPO achieved growth in the third quarter, and Apple's sales again experienced a double-digit year-on-year decline.
Huawei is the only one of the world's top five smartphone vendors to achieve double-digit smartphone sales growth in the third quarter of 2019, with a total of 65.8 million smartphones sold, a year-on-year increase of 26%.
The main reason driving the growth of Huawei's global smartphone sales is its performance in the Chinese market. Huawei sold 40.5 million smartphones in China, increasing its share in the country's market by almost 15 percentage points.
In the third quarter, Samsung smartphone sales increased by 7.8% year-on-year, maintaining the number one position in the world.
Apple iPhone sales continued to decline in the third quarter of 2019, with a total of 40.8 million units sold, a year-on-year decrease of 10.7%.
In addition, the trend of smart phone market share to head brand concentration is more obvious. In Q3 2018, the sales of "other" brand smartphones other than Samsung, Huawei, Apple, Xiaomi, and OPPO accounted for nearly 40% (39.6%) and by Q3 2019, this share has fallen to 35.8%.
Gartner analysis believes that at present, due to the limited innovation in smart phone technology, higher cost performance can increase the market demand for smart phones.
Gartner senior research director Anshul Gupta believes that the needs of most smartphone users are no longer low-cost smartphones. Compared with high-end smartphones, today's smartphone users are more willing to choose mid-range smartphones with higher cost performance.
In addition, smartphone users are waiting for 5G networks to reach more countries and delay purchase decisions until 2020, Anshul said.
