Evidences show that Xiaomi is making a new smartphone with very high-end displays and rear cameras.
In the latest MIUI 11 betas, there are codes suggesting that Xiaomi’s new phone may come with a display of 120Hz refresh rates as well as a 5X zoom telephoto camera that also supports up to 50X digital zoom.
High Refresh Rate
High refresh rate displays have exploded in popularity among smartphone makers. This year alone we’ve already seen 9 new smartphones with panels that refresh at higher than 60Hz, with 3 more that have yet to be launched.
Joining the ranks of the Red Magic 3/3S, OPPO Reno Ace, OnePlus 7 Pro/7T/7T Pro, ROG Phone II, Sharp Aquos R3/zero2, and the upcoming Google Pixel 4/4 XL and Realme X2 Pro, is a new contender from Xiaomi.
Unlike most flagships with high refresh rate panels we’ve seen this year, though, the phone that Xiaomi is working on will have a 120Hz display, according to XDA Developers.
The evidence is that Xiaomi has added code for a refresh rate display setting in the latest MIUI 11 betas.
The description for the setting says that higher refresh rates "[make] the picture smoother" while lower refresh rates "[save] battery," which is similar language you’ll find in refresh rate settings pages on other flagship smartphones.
Digging further into the code, XDA Developers discovered that this setting is currently coded to show two entries: 60Hz and 120Hz.
Hence, Xiaomi's upcoming flagship smartphone will support switching between 60Hz and 120Hz, though there currently isn't a 90Hz refresh rate mode like there is on the ROG Phone II.
Camera Upgrade
Despite a higher refresh rate display, XDA Developers also found evidence showing Xiaomi is making a new smartphone with a 5X zoom telephoto camera that also supports up to 50X digital zoom.
In more recent versions of the MIUI Camera app, code that reveals a new camera zoom mode: "Tele 5X" was uncovered.
This likely means Xiaomi will advertise one of their future smartphones as having 5X optical or "lossless" zoom. In addition, a new “ultra tele” feature with the description that says "use 50X zoom to capture distant objects in greater detail" was also found.
Here is the "hint" icon associated with this new "ultra tele" feature:
Unfortunately, that's about all that is known right now. The XDA report went on with:
We don't know if the future phone with the 5X telephoto camera is the same phone that will support recordings 8K@30fps videos. We also don’t know any details about the main camera sensor on this upcoming smartphone, so we don't know, for example, if it'll be the 108MP Samsung sensor that debuted on the Mi Mix Alpha and we’re expecting to appear on at least 3 more devices.
The level of detail produced by such a sensor is impressive, allowing for details to be preserved even at 8X digital zoom.
