China shipped about 78.1 million smartphones in the second quarter, down 11.0 percent year-over-year, according to a report released Wednesday by Internet Data Center (IDC).
China shipped 164 million units of cell phones in the first half of 2021, up 6.5 percent year-over-year, according to the report.
Vivo shipped 18.6 million units in the second quarter, with a market share of 23.8 percent, up 23.6 percent year-over-year, topping the Chinese market.
OPPO shipped 16.5 million units in the second quarter, with a market share of 21.1 percent, up 17.3 percent year-over-year, ranking second.
Xiaomi shipped 13.4 million units in the second quarter, with a market share of 17.2 percent, up 47.0 percent year-over-year, and ranked third.
Apple shipped 8.6 million units in the second quarter, with a market share of 10.9 percent, up 17.0 percent year-over-year, and ranked fourth.
Honor shipped 6.9 million units in the second quarter, with a market share of 8.9 percent, down 46.0 percent year-over-year, and ranked fifth.
Honor ranked in the top five in China for the first time after launching as a standalone entity with the Play 20, the Play 5 series and the Honor 50 series in June.
IDC said the growth in the first half of the market was driven entirely by better market conditions in the first quarter compared to the same period last year.
But with the original heavy hitters absent in the second quarter and existing products failing to fully inspire most users to switch, the leading vendors had to slow down their shipment pace in the second quarter.
Among the top five vendors, the top four all saw significant year-over-year growth, with Xiaomi up 47.0 percent year-over-year, but still unable to make up for the significant declines of other vendors including Huawei, IDC said.
