China's cell phone market saw shipments of 23 million units in May, down 32 percent year-on-year, according to the latest data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a government think tank.
Overall shipments from January to May totaled 148.4 million units, up 19.3 percent year-on-year.
The report shows that China's domestic brands shipped 19.249 million cell phones in May, down 37.8 percent year-on-year and accounting for 83.8 percent of cell phone shipments in the same period. A total of 25 new models were launched in May, down 16.7 percent year-on-year and accounting for 92.6 percent of new models launched in the same period.
The CAICT attributed the drop in cell phone shipments in May to three reasons: China's cell phone market shipments grew more than 100 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, allowing demand to be released in advance. Tight supply of cell phone chips. Huawei's shipments fell, but other vendors failed to fill the market gap.
China's local branded cell phone shipments from January to May totaled 131 million units, up 16.7 percent year-on-year, accounting for 88.0 percent of cell phone shipments in the same period.
A total of 166 new models were launched from January to May, up 11.4 percent year-on-year, accounting for 91.7 percent of the number of new cell phone models listed in the same period.
Chinaโs 5G cell phone shipments were 16.739 million units in May, up 7.0 percent year-on-year, accounting for 72.9 percent of cell phone shipments in the same period. A total of 10 new models were launched, accounting for 37.0 percent of the number of new models listed for cell phones in the same period.
The Chinese market shipped 108 million 5G cell phones from January to May, up 134.4 percent year-on-year, accounting for 72.8 percent of cell phone shipments in the same period. A total of 90 new models were launch in that period, accounting for 49.7 percent of the number of new cell phone models listed in the same period.
Smartphones shipped 22.604 million units in May 2021, down 30.8 percent year-on-year, accounting for 98.4 percent of cell phone shipments in the same period. A total of 21 new models were launched, down 19.2 percent year-on-year, accounting for 77.8 percent of the number of new models of cell phones launched in the same period.
Smartphone shipments from January to May amounted to 146 million units, up 20.3 percent year-on-year, accounting for 98.2 percent of cell phone shipments in the same period. The total number of new models launched was 145, up 12.4 percent year-on-year, accounting for 80.1 percent of the number of new models listed in the same period.
