Recently, a Beijing car owner complained that his newly purchased China-made Model 3 has an actual range of only about 200 km, which is half the official NEDC range of 468 km.
According to the Shanghai Securities News, the owner said his Model 3 showed a range of 420 kilometers after a full charge, but after 241 kilometers, 5% of the battery remained and the screen showed 39 kilowatt hours of power consumption.
The first deliveries of the China-made Model 3 with CATL batteries were made at the end of October, and it is equipped with a 55 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery.
The model consumes 12.6 kWh per 100 km and has an NEDC range of 468 km, an increase of 22 km over the previous lithium-ion ternary battery version.ย
Tesla sales staff said that most of the China-made Model 3 currently on sale is equipped with CATL's lithium iron phosphate battery.
For the complaints, Tesla China said that there has been good communication with the owner, but does not respond to this, according to the Shanghai Securities News.
CATL, on the other hand, said that its lithium iron phosphate batteries meet quality standards and Tesla's requirements.
Compared to ternary lithium batteries, lithium iron phosphate has the advantage of low cost and good safety, but there is also a relatively low energy density and low temperature electricity is more likely to decay.
Studies have shown that in the same winter low temperature conditions, the vehicle range equipped with a ternary lithium battery will be reduced by 25%, lithium iron phosphate version may reach as much as 35%.
"240 km of actual range is an isolated case and should be because of a combination of factors. There are reasons for use, reasons for the environment, and reasons for battery characteristics." Tesla insiders told the Shanghai Securities News that the owner's driving habits, the environment in the area, road conditions, etc. will affect the actual mileage.
