The number of Internet users in China is 940 million, of which over 30% are in the group with a monthly income of RMB1,000 ($147) or less, a new report showed.
According to the 46th Statistical Report on the Development Status of the Internet in China, released by the China Internet Network Information Center, the number of Internet users in China was 940 million as of June 2020, with 36.25 million new Internet users added from March 2020.
The Internet users mentioned in the report refer to residents aged 6 and above who have used the Internet in the past six months.
The Internet penetration rate in China is 67.0%, up 2.5 percentage points from March 2020, according to the report.
The proportion of Internet users with junior high school and high school/junior high school/technical school education is 40.5% and 21.5% respectively; the proportion of Internet users with college education or above is 18.8%, and the proportion of Internet users with college degree or above is 8.8%, less than 10%.
The number of rural Internet users is 285 million, accounting for 30.4% of all Internet users.
The group of Internet users in China with a monthly income of RMB 2001-5,000 accounted for 32.6 percent, the report showed.
The group of Internet users with a monthly income of RMB 5,000 or more accounted for 24.2 percent.
The group of Internet users with an income but has a monthly income of RMB 1,000 or less accounted for 21.0 percent.
The group without any income stood at 10.5 percent.
China has been the world's largest e-tailing market for seven consecutive years since 2013. As of June 2020, the number of online shoppers in China reached 749 million, up 5.5 percent from March 2020, accounting for 79.7 percent of the overall Internet users.
The e-tailing market is supporting consumption growth in the face of the severe challenge of the neo-coronary pneumonia epidemic.
In the first half of 2020, the amount of mobile payments in China reached 196.98 trillion yuan, up 18.61% year-on-year, ranking first in the world, the report showed.
As of June 2020, the number of online payment users in China reached 805 million, up 4.8% from March 2020, accounting for 85.7% of overall Internet users.
