US adds 38 Huawei affiliates to its 'Entity List'

The US Department of Commerce on August 17 further tightened restrictions on Huawei's access to US technology, adding Huawei's 38 affiliates in 21 countries around the world on the "Entity List".

The department claims that Huawei was using international subsidiaries to circumvent the sanctions which prevent export of US-based technology.

US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Huawei and its affiliates "have worked through third parties to harness US technology in a manner that undermines US national security and foreign policy interests".

The US Secretary of State Pompeo said in a statement said they strongly supports the Commerce Department's expansion of its foreign direct product rules, which will prevent Huawei from circumventing US law by alternative chip production and providing off-the-shelf (OTS) chips produced with tools obtained from the United States.

The list identifies foreign parties prohibited from receiving certain sensitive technologies, and allows Huawei's temporary general license (TGL) to expire.

The US provides affected companies and personnel - primarily Huawei's customers - with ample time to identify and move to other sources of equipment, software, and technology, and to end their operations.
