Zhang Ji, a doctoral student from Huazhong University of Science and Technology's (HUST) Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO), has received Huawei's top "young genius" package, with an annual salary of 2.01 million yuan, according to the university.
This makes Zhang Ji the only Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) student to receive Huawei's top-tier treatment for graduates as of June 30 this year.
According to the HUST, Zhang Ji has published multiple papers as first author in conferences and journals such as ATC, DAC, ICPP, SIGMOD, VLDB, and IEEE TPDS.
Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei had mentioned in a speech within Huawei's EMT (management team) that 20-30 "gifted teenagers" will be recruited from around the world every year. Huawei recruits " young genius" who are paid on an annual salary system, with a maximum annual salary of 2.01 million yuan.
In addition to Huawei, Zhang Ji has also received offers from Tencent, IBM, Alibaba, Sangfor Technologies, and two startups, the highest of which pays more than RMB 3.6 million a year.
"The main reason I chose Huawei was to be able to do something meaningful with a group of like-minded people," he says.
Zhang Ji said Huawei's recruitment criteria for "young genius" is very strict, generally going through about seven rounds of process.
This includes a resume screening, a written test, a preliminary interview, a supervisor interview, an interview with the department head, an interview with the president, and an interview with HR. At each step of the process, candidates are rigorously evaluated and screened.
