Xiaomi today launched a new 5G smartphone - the Mi 10 Lite 5G, in South Korea, priced at just half of Samsung and LG's products.
In a video conference with South Korean journalists on Thursday, Xiaomi executives said the phone's hardware and software specs are similar to those of LG's newly launched Velvet smartphone, but costs 50 percent less.
Compared to the Velvet's price tag of nearly 900,000 won, Xiaomi's Mi 10 Lite 5G costs only 451,000 won.
Xiaomi is selling its phones through online shopping centers in Korea, and these e-commerce channels include 11th Street, Naver Smart Store, and e-commerce platform Coupang, and SK Telecom's online channel. Brick-and-mortar stores will not offer the phone.
LG Electronics doesn't seem to feel threatened, saying that the lack of after-sales service has made Chinese smartphones more difficult to sell in South Korea.
Xiaomi has only 32 smartphone after-sales service stores in South Korea and has a partnership with SK Networks.
The Mi 10 Lite 5G is not only the first Chinese smartphone brand to sell a 5G phone in South Korea, but it is also the first overseas mobile phone brand to sell a 5G phone in the market. In the past, Xiaomi has sold 4G phones in South Korea.
So far, the cheapest 5G smartphone model in South Korea is the Galaxy A51 from Samsung Electronics, which was launched for 572,000 won in May.
South Korea's smartphone market is dominated by Samsung, which had a 69 percent market share last year, followed by LG and Apple.
LG Electronics, in second place, had about 17 percent of the market, and Apple gained about 10 percent.
Of the ten best-selling smartphones in South Korea, seven are Samsung phones and two are Apple iPhones.
The South Korean smartphone market is largely dominated by these three companies, and Chinese smartphone brands have yet to establish sufficient presence.
Now, with the advantage of 5G and affordable price, companies like Xiaomi want to participate in the Korean mobile phone market.
