The subway in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, today began allowing commuters to ride the subway via facial recognition while wearing a mask.
Passengers will only need to download an app, bind a payment method and authenticate their face to enter and exit the subway station via facial recognition.
The Harbin subway has become the first subway in China to support entering and going out of stations with facial recognition while wearing masks, according to information published on the Harbin Municipal People's Government website.
Up to now, the Harbin Metro has installed a total of 133 face recognition systems in 27 stations, which have at least two face recognition devices or two face recognition channels for entering and exiting the stations.
Yan Jun, general manager of the Chengdu Zhiyuanhui R&D Center, one of the R&D departments of the system, said that using face recognition to ride the subway avoids the use of physical ticket cards, banknotes and other direct contact with the gate, which will effectively reduce the risk of cross-infection virus.
Zhao Yunlong, director of the ticketing department at the operation business headquarters of Harbin Metro Group, pointed out that the application of this system can reduce the time for passengers to queue up for tickets, pass through gates and take the train, as well as reduce manpower and material costs.
Zhao Yunlong said that the system will scan the facial features of passengers in 3D when they enter their face information in the mobile application.
At the same time, the gate end system is also suitable for all kinds of complex light environments, and can realize binocular infrared live detection of passengers and automatically capture facial images.
The system's false recognition rate is less than 1 in 100,000.
