Sony to hold PS5 online launch next week-CnTechPost

PlayStation China announced on Weibo that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) will be released on June 5 at 4:00 a.m. Beijing time (June 4 at 1 p.m. PT / 4 p.m. ET), and Sony promised "to be able to feel the future of gaming on the PlayStation 5".

Jim Ryan, president, and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said the launch event lasts about an hour or so and will showcase some of the games you'll be playing on the PlayStation 5 after its launch this holiday season.

Sony is not expected to reveal all the details of the PS5 host at this event, and it is rumored that Sony has more events planned for the coming weeks and months.

"This is part of our PS5 update series, so rest assured we'll still have plenty to share after next week's showcase," Ryan explained.

So far, Sony has announced the PS5's specs, logo, and new wireless grip. Sony hasn't shown the PS5 console itself yet, and it's unclear if it will be revealed at the June 5 event.

The PS5 will feature a custom octa-core AMD Zen 2 CPU clocked at 3.5GHz (variable frequency) and a custom GPU based on AMD's RDNA 2 architecture hardware with 10.28 teraflops and 36 computing units clocked at 2.23GHz (also variable frequency).

A key feature of Sony's new PlayStation 5 is the proprietary SSD, which offers 825GB of storage and 5.5GB/s performance.

Epic Games recently provided an Unreal 5 tech demo showing the Unreal 5 engine running on PS5, showing off the loading of cinematic-grade 8K resources and dynamic lighting effects.

The following is a full translation from the PlayStation China Weibo:

From the first generation PlayStation to the PlayStation 4, our hosts have continued to push boundaries and challenge higher and higher goals with each generation to give our players an even better experience. This has been the unchanging mission of the PlayStation brand for over 25 years, and one that I have been involved with since the early days.

Launching a new host is undoubtedly one of the most exciting things in the world. Although the road to release is slightly "different" this time, we are as excited as ever to join you on this journey to redefine the future of video games.

We've already covered the technical specifications of the new mainframe and showcased the new DualSense wireless controller. But how can launching a new host be without games!

I'm excited to share the good news that we'll soon be able to give you a first look at the games that you'll be playing when the PlayStation 5 goes on sale for the year-end holidays. The games coming to the PS5 platform are among the best in the industry and come from creative studios around the world. Every studio, regardless of size or history, is doing its best to develop games that can reflect the potential of the new host.

The full length of the online launch will be over an hour long, and this is the first time we've felt the excitement together in a virtual format. The inability to hold offline events gives us a great opportunity to rethink and embark on a journey with you in a new way, even though we are far apart and close in heart. This is just part of our series of new PS5 information, with more to come after next week's online launch.

We invite you to join us on June 5, 2020 at 4 am to review the next generation's game lineup. I hope you can be proud of me.
