OnePlus had previously released the new OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro phones, and the OnePlus 8 Pro's perspective filter feature has raised privacy concerns in China.
Now OnePlus says that in order to eliminate the potential for extreme circumstances that could affect user privacy and allay user concerns, it has decided to temporarily disable the filter feature through a software update, which will complete the push within a week.
OnePlus also said that there are currently a lot of descriptions on Weibo about the lens' perspective ability that are untrue, and we will also use the law to defend our brand and our users against untrue images on Weibo, malicious opinion leading and personal attacks on OnePlus users.
This so-called "see-through" feature is primarily due to the OnePlus 8 Pro's rear camera being sensitive to infrared light, which allows OnePlus 8 Pro users to make certain subject material "transparent" after taking a photo and modifying it using filters. It has been confirmed that this feature works for items made of plastic/fabric.
The full text of the OnePlus statement reads as follows:
Regarding the OnePlus 8 Pro "Autumnal Intentions" filter camera, today we would like to give you a response and explanation.
Recently, there has been a lot of discussion on the Internet about OnePlus' "autumnal mood" filter camera's ability to see through, which has raised privacy concerns and caused problems for OnePlus users and the general public.
When planning the OnePlus 8 Pro's filter, we wanted to take advantage of the lens' ability to perceive infrared light and provide users with a uniquely textured photographic style effect. Recently, however, based on user feedback, we have found that under very specific environmental conditions, the filter may have a slight perspective effect on specific materials at very close range.
OnePlus has always placed a high priority on user privacy, and in order to eliminate the possibility of extreme situations that could affect user privacy and allay concerns, we have decided to temporarily disable the filter feature through a software update and we will complete the push within a week.
We also see that a lot of OnePlus 8 Pro users love the "Autumn" filter, and they have used it to take a lot of very scenic photos.
We will also take legal action to defend our brand and our users against the inaccurate images, malicious public opinion and personal attacks on OnePlus users.
Finally, apologies once again to the OnePlus users and the general public who have been troubled by this. We will fulfill our social responsibility as a company and treat every aspect of product testing and user experience more rigorously, always insisting on bringing users a better experience.
