After rolling out the Live Caption feature on Pixel Phones for Android, Google is now bringing the feature to Chrome for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chrome OS platforms.
This means that if the user enables the "live captioning" switch in the accessibility settings, Chrome will automatically detect the voice in the media content being played and generate captions for all media played in the browser.
In terms of accessibility settings, Google Chrome for screen reader users already allows for generating descriptions for images without Alt text.
And Chrome can also link accessibility features to Windows 10 Captions, allowing users to customize how closed captions are displayed in the browser.
How to enable live captioning in Chrome:
1. Launch the latest Chrome version of Canary 84.0.4136.2 or higher
2. Visit the chrome://flags page.
3. Search the live keyword and select Enable for the highlighted "Enables the live captions feature which generates caption for media playing in Chrome." logo.
4. Restarting the browser
Note: Google has provided this description for the logo on Mac, Windows, Linux, and Chrome OS." Enable live captioning to generate captions for media played in the Chrome browser."
5. Click Menu > Settings > Advanced
6. Select Accessibility or visit the chrome://settings/Accessibility page and enable Live Caption.
Chrome's Live Caption feature may be useful for people with hearing impairments or others who are learning a non-native language.
