Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system saw a rare regression in April 2020, and macOS clearly benefited from this slide with a significant increase in market share.
Windows 10 is already the number one desktop operating system in the world, with 1 in 2 PCs currently running it. And, while Windows 10's market share is expected to continue to grow, especially after Microsoft retires Windows 7.
Windows 10's market share will still grow after more devices are upgraded to the new version, but last month didn't follow the previous trend.
According to NetMarketShare, Windows 10's market share actually dropped from 57.34% to 56.08% in April, while macOS improved from 3.41% to 4.15%.
On the Windows 7 side, it's down to 25.59%, which seems like a no-brainer since it no longer receives updates and security patches. Meanwhile, Windows 10 remains the first choice for most people in the Windows ecosystem.
Security experts have warned that the number of vulnerabilities against Windows 7 devices is increasing as a result of it sharing code with newer Windows, and that these vulnerabilities expose devices to potential attacks.
Windows 10 is Microsoft's recommended option for anyone still using Windows 7, but as it stands, it's clear that not everyone is willing to make the upgrade move.
There's no doubt that Windows 7 has become the new Windows XP, just as Microsoft retired the 2001 operating system in 2014, and be aware that Windows XP still has a market share of over 1.32% six years after its retirement.
