On March 27, at the Huawei Developer Conference 2020 (Cloud), Huawei and Kirin Software, iSoft Infrastructure Software, Union Tech, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences Software Institute jointly announced the official release of a commercial version of the operating system based on openEuler.

The first operating systems to participate include Galaxy Kirin server operating system V7.6, iSoft server operating system V5.1 (Kunpeng version), Deepin Euler V1.0, and Aura server operating system 1.0.

The openEuler project is derived from Huawei's server operating system EulerOS. On September 18, 2019, the open-source was announced, and its open-source community was launched. On December 31, Huawei announced the openEuler source code, which is hosted on the Gitee platform.

In addition to the four major partners that have released their respective commercial releases based on openEuler, openEuler itself has also released the 20.03 LTS version.

In the afternoon "openEuler 20.03 LTS Release and OSV (Operating System Software Provider) Commercial Software Release" media roundtable sharing, more information about openEuler was announced.

Jiang Dayong, general manager of the server operating system field of Huawei's computing production line, introduced that as of March 25, openEuler's IOS has been downloaded 5479 times, the number of code contributors 220, and the total number of code contributions 5324 times.

Contributors applied for the establishment of 30+ sub-project groups, and the preparatory group pushed key community organizations to start operations, including the community secretariat, technical committee, and security committee.

Regarding openEuler 20.03 LTS, Jiang Dayong introduced that it has mature commercial capabilities. The openEuler 20.03 LTS kernel is based on Linux Kernel 4.19, with Glibc 2.28, GCC 7.3, systemd 243, KVM virtualization support, iSula 2.0.0, Docker 18.09, and Kata 1.7.0.

In addition, openEuler has optimized the software's full stack, including applications, runtime/acceleration libraries, virtualization/containers and the underlying operating system.

The key features of openEuler include:

  • iSula lightweight container
  • A-Tune scene self-optimization
  • Integrated KAE plugin
  • Multi-core scheduling

In terms of hardware compatibility, it supports x86/ARM 64, TaiShan 2280 balanced type, and FusionServer Pro 2288H VS.

At the same time, the release cycle of openEuler was also announced:

The regular version is released every 6 months

The LST version will be released every two years with 4 years of support

Jiang Dayong introduced that openEuler and the four cooperative publishers are complementary in technology and business. Huawei's openEuler is not a commercial version.

openEuler is mainly based on Kunpeng Ecology, focusing on realizing business demands in areas such as basic software and chips, while cooperating OSV can make any distribution that it wants based on the LTS version, including creating some features, creating differentiated competitiveness, and realizing commercial realization.

Based on open-source, in principle OSV is encouraged to give better versions to the community, but it is not required.

Like the 4 OSVs, Jiang Dayong introduced that Kirin and iSoft have been cultivating in the industry for many years. They have different industrial characteristics with Huawei, each has complimentary technical advantages, and can achieve business collaboration.

Union Tech brings the advantages of its characteristic desktop environment DDE to openEuler.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences is a national-level scientific research institution, which has the most accumulation in technology research and development and also has some future-oriented innovative technologies, which is also an indispensable ability for the rapid innovation and development of the operating system ecology.

Together, these partners are building momentum for the openEuler ecosystem, and it is expected that various other manufacturers will follow up.

Huawei also introduced the future development plan of openEuler, which is roughly summarized as: OSV is enabled in multiple dimensions in the community and the operating system technology and service level are continuously improved.

Jiang Dayong said that a system openEuler technology certification, training and operating system principles course will be held next, and the openEuler Technology Summit will be held in April.
