Baidu engineer sentenced to 3 years in jail for using its server to mine Bitcoin-CnTechPost

From mining, selling Bitcoins to being sentenced to 3 years, this was the experience of a Baidu employee in just 7 months.

Yes, he was mining Bitcoin and other coins using Baidu's search server.

In a recently published referee document, details of Mr. An's practices were announced.

From the end of January to the end of May 2018, Mr. An saved 155 servers of wool for mining Bitcoin and Monero coins, and sold a part of them for a profit of 100,000 yuan.

But after the incident, not only was the money confiscated, but an additional fine of 11,000 yuan was also imposed, and another three years in prison.

Recently, China Judgment Documents Network published a criminal ruling, which disclosed the details of the case.

Mining digital currencies

Mr. An started in early 2018.

At the end of 2017, the price of bitcoin soared to nearly 20,000 US dollars. According to the exchange rate at that time, the price of a bitcoin yuan was nearly 130,000.

Although the subsequent price of the currency has been reduced, it is a great temptation to earn one tens of thousands of dollars by digging one.

However, the computing power held by an ordinary person is limited, and it is almost impossible to mine coins with their own equipment. To make money with virtual coins, first of all, large computing power is required.

So, Mr. An thought of using his position to use Baidu's server to mine for himself.

At that time, Mr. An joined Baidu for 1 year and 3 months. As an employee of the Baidu search operation and maintenance department, he had the authority to operate the Baidu search server.

On the MacBook that the company assigned to him, there is iterm software that can control all server central control machines. With this software, he uploads the mining scripts through the central control machine and allows the server to download the mining scripts in batches.

In this way, Baidu's computing power can be used for Mr. An mining.

At 23: 4: 57 on January 26, 2018, Mr. An started mining to get rich.

He first uploaded a compressed file miner.tar.gz with his work account, which contains a script named java_4u3. This script can automatically perform decompression, create directories, delete directories, and automatically connect to the agent for network exchange to achieve control. The purpose of the server.

Then, he compiled the mining program and deployed the above program on 155 servers that illegally controlled Baidu, then uploaded the mining script through the central control machine, and issued batch download instructions through the iterm software, allowing more than 200 servers to download the mining Mine script.

Upload the computing resources of Baidu to the hash website through a script.

The Hash website mines Monero coins through its uploaded computing resources, and finally settles them in bitcoin according to the amount of uploaded computing resources.

Next, Mr. An withdrew Bitcoin from the hash website to otcbtc.com, and sold about 100,000 yuan through this website, and then the people who bought his bitcoin transferred the money to his Alipay account. .

Currently in the wallet of the Hash website, it still has about 1.44 bitcoins, and about 1.5 bitcoins on the otcbtc.com website.

According to the calculation of the currency price, Mr. An probably obtained 4 ~ 5 bitcoins in this meal. I do n’t know if my friends who have searched on Baidu during this period of time have become stuck.

But Mr. An's handcuffs warned that it was near.

Mining for 4 months, occupying 155 servers

After Mr. An's last deployment of the mining script (23: 59: 5 on May 30, 2018), Baidu found a problem-a large number of servers were running abnormally, and they were occupying the company's server computing resources and executing mining programs. .

Then they followed the network cable and retrieved the background operation log to find that the operator was Mr. An, a senior operation and maintenance engineer searching the operation and maintenance department.

At the same time, they also found that Mr. An had been secretly mining for several months, and had deployed mining scripts several times, with 155 servers under control.

Baidu clearly stipulates that such activities are forbidden. The mining software will occupy the computing resources of the server, which will cause the system to run slower.

Then, Baidu spent 27,000 yuan to request Beijing Naite Technology Co., Ltd. to provide emergency services. The specific items are: sample extraction, sample analysis, server log extraction, log analysis, traceability, report writing.

After grasping the exact evidence, Qin, the person in charge of Baidu's professional ethics construction department, called the police.

At around 10:00 on July 18, Mr. An, who was working, was called to the conference room by the staff of the Ethics Committee, and the police were present. He explained the fact that he illegally controlled Baidu's servers on the spot.

After capturing Mr. An, the police picked up one silver Apple laptop, one TOKEN key, one Apple 4S mobile phone, one Apple 6 mobile phone, and one Huawei mobile phone.

On August 24, Mr. An was formally arrested and detained in a detention center in Haidian District, Beijing.

On January 4, 2019, the Haidian District People's Court of Beijing officially opened the case. The public hearing held that the defendant, Mr. An, violated state regulations and used technical means to illegally control the computer information system. The circumstances are particularly serious. His behavior has constituted a crime of illegally controlling the computer information system and should be punished:

He was sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of RMB 11,000.

The sentence shall be calculated from the date of execution of this judgment. If the sentence is detained before the execution of the sentence, one day of detention is converted to one day of sentence, that is, from July 18, 2018 to July 17, 2021.

At the same time, the amount of RMB 111,000 detained in the case, of which RMB 100,000 was used as illegal income, was confiscated; RMB 11,000 was used to offset the fine.

Mr. An refused, and appealed within the legal time limit, but did not submit new evidence.

Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court filed a case on January 13, 2020, formed a collegiate panel according to law, decided not to hold a trial, rejected the appeal, and maintained the original verdict. The trial has now ended.
