GM today released the third-generation electric vehicle platform and Ultium battery at the Warren Technology Center. This is also the first time that GM has demonstrated the modular drive system and the third-generation global electric vehicle platform equipped with Ultium's exclusive battery.
This platform will cover all levels of models, including pickups and performance cars.
In other words, as long as GM wants to build, the third-generation electric vehicle platform and Ultium battery can help them achieve their goals.
Ultium battery cells can be arranged in both vertical and horizontal directions, which helps optimize battery energy storage and vehicle layout.
The battery capacity ranges from 50 kWh to 200 kWh, which can support a range of up to 640 kilometers, and the acceleration of 100 kilometers is only 3 seconds.
The battery also supports home charging and DC fast charging. Most models will be equipped with a 400-volt battery pack and a 200 kW fast charge capability. The electric pickup will be equipped with an 800-volt battery pack and a 350 kW fast charge capability.
At present, GM has established a joint venture with LG Chemical to jointly develop and produce battery cells, with the goal of reducing battery costs to less than $ 100 per kilowatt-hour.
The battery will use a patented chemical formula with a lower cobalt content. Continuous breakthroughs in technology and production processes are expected to further reduce battery costs.
At the same time, the structure of electric vehicles is relatively simple compared to traditional fuel vehicles. GM has adopted a strategy of collaborative development of the entire vehicle and the drive system to further reduce the complexity and number of parts of the electric vehicle.
GM initially plans to launch 19 battery and drive unit combinations.
In January of this year, GM launched the Cruise Origin pure electric autonomous driving shared model in San Francisco.
Soon there will be more and more models based on the third-generation electric vehicle platform and Ultium battery, including Cadillac Lyriq pure electric luxury SUV which will be unveiled in April, and GMC Hummer, which will be unveiled in May.
