Apple plans to launch a 12.9-inch iPad Pro and multiple MacBook laptops with Mini-LED screens by the end of 2020, DigiTimes quoted industry sources as saying.
DigiTimes said that Apple will also use Mini-LED backlights for "certain LCD models", but it is unclear whether this refers to the iMac/iMac Pro or a standalone display.
Apple's high-end Pro Display XDR uses 576 LEDs, but it's not a Mini-LED display.
In contrast, the first iPads and MacBooks equipped with Mini-LED backlights are expected to have more than 10,000 LEDs.
This is consistent with the information shared earlier this week by Tianfeng Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said that Apple is developing six products with Mini-LED displays, which will be released at the end of 2020.
Kuo said this includes the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro, 10.2-inch iPad, 7.9-inch iPad mini, 27-inch iMac Pro, 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro.
Kuo also expects that the new iMac Pro will be released in the fourth quarter of 2020. Since the iMac Pro was originally released in December 2017, Apple has not updated it, so users of this update have been waiting for it.
Mini-LED backlit displays will allow thinner and lighter product designs while providing many of the same benefits as OLED displays used on the latest iPhones, including good color gamut performance, high contrast and dynamic range, and local dimming for purer black.
Kuo also said that Taiwan's largest LED maker Epistar will become one of Apple's iPad and MacBook suppliers.
